This behaviour has no place on the rugby field.
A French Cup juniors game had to be abandoned after a disgruntled player rendered the referee unconscious shortly after being shown a red card.
The incident occurred roughly 25 minutes into the semi-final clash between Saint-Esteve and Toulouse. A Saint-Esteve player, who had just recently returned from supsension, was sent off by referee Benjamin Casty.
He didn’t take too kindly to the decision and decided to let his feelings be known with a violent swing that landed flush on the referee’s chin which saw him go crashing down to the turf. He was out cold before he fell to the Earth. A brawl ensued and the game was eventually abandoned as Carty was evacuated to hospital where he was treated for cheekbone and jaw injuries.
President of the French Rugby League Federation, Marc Palanques, was quick to condemn what happened, as the New Zealand Herald reports.
“I hope that the National Disciplinary Commission, which will meet on Wednesday, will be uncompromising.”
