WATCH: Connacht produce stunning, evocative tribute to captain John Muldoon

'Mr Connacht' wins his 300th cap tomorrow

Patrick McCarry

“Loyal… A pretty inspirational team man… He’s never let them down… A mentor and a leader… The greatest leader I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing with.”

Amazing, touching words from John Muldoon’s Connacht teammate’s, past and present, ahead of his 300th appearance for the province.

No Irish player has represented their province as much as ‘Mul’ has Connacht. From starting off on a developmental deal in 2003 to leading Connacht to Guinness PRO12 glory last season and into the Champions Cup this time out, it has been quite a journey.

As long as the body and mind is able, he is willing.

Never has a man been so in tune with the environment he has represented. Some of the Connacht lads call him ‘Mr Connacht’ and who are we to argue? Sure, as he told us last season:

“We have our history, it’s a lot like where we’re from and the landscape and the environment we’re in, it’s a tough place. But inside that tough place there’s a beauty to it – maybe I’m getting sentimental in my old age. But there’s something special about it.

“If you come to Galway, there’s a harshness to it, but there’s a beauty to it.”

Harsh yet beautiful. Muldoon knows the score.

The province have produced this fantastic tribute video to their captain. It’s well worth 90 seconds of your time:
