Yoel Romero is a genetic marvel.
In fact, there’s an argument to be made for Yoel Romero being the best athlete on the UFC’s roster.
Romero entered into MMA with an incredible wrestling pedigree. While time may not have been on his side, his genetics certainly seemed to be. He was a world champion freestyle wrestler in the last millennium and an Olympic silver medalist in the 2000 Sydney games.
“The Soldier of God” made his MMA debut in 2009 at the ripe old age of 32, but has only lost one of 14 professional bouts. at UFC 213, he will finally get his crack at a world title at the age of 40. He takes on Robert Whittaker for the interim middleweight strap in the co-main event.
At the open workouts ahead of the event, Romero put on a show, dazzling fans with his incredible feats of athleticism.
There are some things that can’t be achieved by hard work alone. Romero’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle-like physique is one of them. The Cuban clearly had a leg-up in the genetic lottery.
It’s important to remember that Romero has come through the USADA era with flying colours. Although he failed one test, that was proven to be the result of a contaminated supplement.
He is one of the most tested athletes on the UFC’s roster, which makes this photo all the more terrifying.
