Yoel Romero’s performance at UFC 205 was one of the most terrifying in his short, but storied career.
The Olympic silver medalist only began his professional career in 2009, but man has he made some serious waves in the sport in such a short space of time.
Romero has some serious scalps on his record including a decision win over Jacare Souza and knockout victories over the likes of Lyoto Machida, Tim Kennedy and Derek Brunson.
In his last trip to the Octagon, the Soldier of God silenced the crowd inside the Madison Square Garden by brutally knocking out former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman in devastating fashion. His vicious flying knee finish of the All American was enough to earn him a Performance of the Night accolade that comes with a tasty $50,000 cash bonus. To top it all off, he’ll likely be rewarded with a crack at Michael Bisping for his efforts.
As impressive as he looked inside the Octagon, his thunder was somewhat stolen by his charismatic translator who handled the post-fight media work in his stride. It was the greatest chemistry between an on-screen duo since Turner and Hooch/Kenan and Kel/Zack and Cody (choose the one most relatable to you).
He never once stuttered or tumbled over his words, he instantly relayed the questions to the fighter in his native tongue and without skipping a beat, he translated the answers with the delivery of the type of gentleman who enters into a swanky piano bar for the first time, orders ‘the usual’ and gets it.
If you’ve never seen Romero before, all you have to do is listen to any podcast featuring Brendan Schaub to get a sense of how shredded he is. Whenever the Cuban’s name crops up, you’ll hear Big Brown talk at length about his ludicrously ripped physique.
Safe to say he doesn’t look like you’re average middle-aged man. It’s rare that a dude who’s pushing 40 has the dimensions of a Marvel superhero, but what’s even rarer is that his suave linguist may just give him a run for his money in that department.
