WATCH: Dana White’s frank interview on Conor McGregor’s next move and Ronda Rousey doubts

He chats about Floyd too

Patrick McCarry

Dana White has three words for Floyd Mayweather after all the guff about a boxing bout with Conor McGregor.

It’s great that the UFC president can surface, once a week, to shoot down rumours, assuage fears, hype fights and shoot the shit.

White did the media rounds on Wednesday and one topic came up in every conversation: McGregor vs. Mayweather.

It’s mildly amazing how a story can move on so quickly. Nate Diaz has been forgotten, by vast pockets of the media at least, while the focus turns to a fight as unlikely as Steve Collins taking on former Malcolm in the Middle star Frankie Muniz.

Asked about a potential McGregor fight with ‘Money’, White responded, “Call me Floyd.” On  continued:

“First of all, Conor McGregor is under contract with the UFC…

“Floyd an I go way back, to the amateurs. I just saw him at the Celtics-Lakers game and we talked. Floyd and I have a good relationship. We go at each other sometimes but we go way back.”

As for McGregor’s next move, White said, “He will not be on UFC 200. We’re going to get together next week and see what card he will be fighting on.”

He joked that McGregor-Diaz II at UFC 202, in August, ‘sounds like a good idea to me’.

McGregor Rousey

McGregor will fight in the UFC in the coming months. The fighting future of the promotions other superstar, Ronda Rousey, is less certain.

It was originally conceived that ‘Rowdy’ would feature at UFC 200, in July, but the promotion’s return to New York, in November, is now being talked up. The woman herself has yet to announce a comeback date. On The Dan Patrick Show, White said:

“I would really like her to fight this year. I hope she does. That’s up to Ronda.

“Ronda is coming to come out and let us know when she’s going to fight again. That’s up to her.”
