The UFC’s first Brazilian event of 2015 was night for the underdogs
Former heavyweight champion Frank Mir upset the odds in the main event at Porte Alegre with a brutal knockout victory over favourite Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva. The American dropped the towering fighter with a hard left and followed it up with vicious elbows on the mat. The referee awarded Mir the KO at 1:40 of the first round.
Sam Alvey scored a brilliant come-from behind win over Cezar Ferreira by knocking the Brazilian out in the first round. Smilin’ Sam unloaded a devastating two-punch combination counter that knocked the Brazilian out cold.
37-year-old Marion Reneau sent out a message to the rest of the women’s bantamweight division by submitting Jessica Andrade in style. Reneau locked in a triangle choke in the opening round to hand the top ten fighter the first submission defeat of her career.
Matt Dwyer scored a highlight reel over William Macario in the prelims. The Canadian welterweight turned out the home town favourite’s lights with an incredible superman punch in, you’ve guessed it, the very first stanza.
Mike De La Torre provided the first major upset of the night with a blistering first round knockout over Tiago Trator.
