Daniel Cormier won the vacant light-heavyweight title at UFC 187 last night and turned his attention straight to the man whose belt he claimed
With Jon Jones stripped of the title and out of the sport until his legal issues are resolved, Cormier beat Anthony Johnson in Las Vegas with a third-round submission victory.
Jones had been tapped to defend against Johnson until his alleged involvement in a hit-and-run in New Mexico last month, so Cormier, who was convincingly defeated by Jones earlier this year, stepped in and wrestled his way to victory.
But Jones’ shadow hung over the event and Cormier’s post-fight interview contained a strong message to the former 205lb champ.
In Jones’ absence, Cormier turned his attention to a possible first defence against Ryan Bader, and the pair had a heated and rather NSFW exchange at Cormier’s media conference.
In the night’s co-main event, Chris Weidman scored a thrilling knockout of rival Vitor Belfort in a middleweight title fight.
Weidman withstood a furious early barrage from the Brazilian before registering a takedown and finishing Belfort off with a flurry of punches.
