All the boxes are ticked, now it’s time to sit back and enjoy the show.
When you have two personalities like Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz scheduled to fight each other, you don’t need to do a lot in the way of promoting. As we saw from the spectacular pre-fight press conference featuring UFC 196’s headliners, these guys are doing a pretty good job of building hype by themselves.
Rafael dos Anjos’ late withdrawal meant that the UFC had to quickly cut together a new promo for the event before fight night, which dropped on Thursday. The 30-second clip does exactly what it needs to do. A few highlights of both fighters in the main event will ensure that any newcomers to the sport who may not have heard of Diaz before know exactly what they’re in store for.
It’s also nice to see the title fight on the card getting some love. The more attention that is drawn to McGregor and Diaz, the more Holly Holm v Miesha Tate has the feeling of a MacDonald v Lawler II about it.
