Gunnar Nelson was a ball of emotion, singular, after taking arguably the biggest scalp of his career at UFC 189.
The Icelandic-Irish defeated highly-touted welterweight Brandon Thatch in stunning fashion in Las Vegas.
This fight started off with a bang as Gunni landed a huge left-right combination that dropped Thatch to the mat. Nelson then got full mount on the American and continued to showcase his stellar BJJ prowess by constantly working for the submission.
That hard work on the ground eventually paid off as he managed to get his arm under Thatch’s chin and lock in a rear-naked choke at 2:54 of the first stanza. The win sees Nelson improve his record to 14-1-1, and his UFC record to 5-1.
