Sean Spencer, the man who gave Cathal Pendred his third straight UFC win, will receive both his show and his win money despite losing a unanimous decision to the Irishman at UFC Fight Night Boston on Sunday night.
The victory sparked debate in the MMA community with many fans scoring the fight in Spencer’s favour and, just yesterday, the pair informally agreed to a rematch via Twitter.
But Spencer, whose controversial loss to “The Punisher” moved his UFC record to 3-3, is set to be paid his full fight purse according to MMAJunkie.com.
A UFC official confirmed that Dublin’s Pendred will take home $16,000 (€13,800) while Spencer will earn €28,000 (€24,100) despite falling short by 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28 on the judges scorecards.
This is not unprecedented with the promotion as, just last year, England’s Ross Pearson was awarded a $30,000 (€26,000) win bonus when he lost a contentious decision to TUF 1 vet Diego Sanchez.
