Paddy Holohan has moved into the world of politics.
The former UFC flyweight was announced as a Sinn Féin candidate for local elections in the Tallaght South constituency at a selection convention on Wednesday night.
Holohan, from Jobstown, was named as one of five candidates to contest the two Tallaght wards of South and Central.
Speaking about Holohan’s candidacy, Councillor Cathal King commented: “I couldn’t think of a more committed and enthusiastic member of our community to take on this challenge. Paddy is a committed Republican and a community activist and has always lended his hand and used his fame in the sporting world to help out local charities, groups and schools over the years.
“When I approached him to run and despite his busy schedule, he didn’t hesitate to say yes with his usual infectious enthusiasm.”
Holohan opened up the famous UFC Fight Night 46 card in Dublin, when his submission victory over Josh Sampo set the stage for a flawless night for Irish fighters.
‘The Hooligan’ fought five times under the UFC banner but was forced into a premature retirement after learning of a rare blood deficiency in 2016.
“I have always said, this is my home and I would never leave it,” Holohan said of his nomination from Sinn Féin.
“I live here with my partner and two young boys and I am invested in our community and want to see it thrive for my family and for everyone around here.”
