Five more days.
It’s fight week and that means the UFC’s fly on the wall documentary series, UFC Embedded, is in full swing.
In the second episode for UFC 202, we catch up with Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. The former lightweight contender is trying to make a run in the welterweight division and he faces his toughest ever task at 170 in the form of Rick “The Horror” Story on Saturday.
With such a huge fight just around the corner, you’d imagine Cowboy is doing everything he can to rest up and make sure his body is prepared for war at the weekend, right?
Wrong.
Perhaps the star of today’s episode was Nate Diaz’s training partner Victor Galdon. The motormouth MMA fighter took centre stage as he spoke about how easy the Stockton native is finding the weight cut this time around.
“170 was never hard for him. Now it’s a more comfortable weight for him. He sits well, he sits big, it’s sort of nice for him. 155 is sort of a tax on the body. You have to get in really supreme shape to get there and then hold the shape and then afterwards, your bod is freaked out.”
“So you come back from 155 and your body is like holding water, you’re bloated, everything is happening because your body went through a turmoil. You beat it up really bad. Even though you went to the fight and you’re in super shape, if you’re not walking around at 155, it’s different.”
He then gave a very entertaining spiel in which he claimed that he knew that McGregor wouldn’t be able to bully Diaz inside the Octagon, just by glancing at his ink.
“You’ve got this new fighter on the scene – McGregor – he’s very flashy, he’s got all this bullshit, he’s got all this fanbase behind him. I’m like, well, good for him, you’re doing a good job, but did I think he was going to have any chance of whooping Nate’s ass? Hell no, because he’s a new guy. Brand new tattoos, still shiny from getting tatted on there, and this guy’s going to beat Nathan? Yeah, right!”
“I don’t have a doubt in him again, that he’s going to do it again. Anyone that doubts him is crazy.”
We think what he was trying to say here is that McGregor doesn’t have the same experience that Nate has, but what a wonderfully unique way of expressing that point.
