The fights aren’t getting any easier for Miesha Tate.
After dethroning Rousey-slayer Holly Holm at UFC 196 on Saturday night, there was no shortage of options on the table for ‘Cupcake.’
An immediate rematch with Holm wouldn’t have been out of the question. The completion of a trilogy with the soon-to-return Ronda Rousey would have made plenty of sense. And top contender Amanda Nunes won in impressive fashion on Saturday so a clash with her wouldn’t have upset many fans.
After the night of remarkable fights, UFC president Dana White was asked by ESPN about what’s next for Tate now that she’s claimed UFC gold for the first time.
“I think that Ronda now will fight Miesha Tate for the title,” White said. “That’s what’s going to happen. That’s what I said before this fight even happened. Whoever wins tonight will fight Ronda for the title.
“I texted Ronda, Ronda wasn’t watching the fight. I text Ronda and she said ‘what happened?’ I said ‘Miesha just choked her unconscious’ and she said ‘looks like I’ve got to get back to work.’ She’s scheduled to not come back until October or November but it doesn’t mean I can’t ask.”
Tate has fought Rousey twice, losing both fights via armbar, and the pair have one of the fiercest rivals in MMA history so it almost certainly will sell itself, whenever it happens.
