If Max Holloway and Conor McGregor ever fought again, the build-up would be gold.

Shortly after Max Holloway was forced out of UFC 222’s headliner due to injury, Conor McGregor sent him a message.

The undisputed UFC featherweight king had to withdraw from his scheduled defence against Frankie Edgar after suffering a leg injury in camp. The pull-out marked the second time this fight has fallen through. It was an injury to Edgar’s face that caused it to collapse in UFC 218.

A day or so after the UFC 222 announcement was made, McGregor shared an image of his 2013 fight against the Hawaiian. The post showed a 25-year-old McGregor laying hands on a wide-eyed 21-year-old Holloway. The Dubliner went on to win a unanimous decision.

Holloway was never going to let McGregor send that without issuing a response.

A couple of hours later, he fired back with a gag about McGregor’s last fight, a TKO loss to Floyd Mayweather.

The fight ended with McGregor getting lit up on the feet by the boxing legend. While Mayweather was overwhelming McGregor with vicious flurries, the referee stepped in to put a stop to it.

This isn’t the first time Holloway has more than held his own with McGregor in the trash talk department.

After Holloway finished Jose Aldo for the second consecutive time at UFC 218, McGregor sent a cryptic tweet featuring the featherweight champion.

The photo was taken backstage following McGregor’s win over Holloway. Although Holloway was the focus of the image, McGregor is clearly visible standing in the background wearing the sunglasses he misses.

While McGregor was serving up a reminder of the past, Holloway wanted to keep things a little more current.

He uploaded an impressive photoshop featuring all the records he has set at 145 lbs since McGregor left the division.
