Until Conor McGregor is defeated again, Joseph Duffy will continue to get these questions.
Irish Joe recorded a stunning submission victory over Ivan Jorge at UFC Glasgow, on Saturday, to confirm himself as a real prospect in the lightweight division.
Duffy locked in a triangle on Jorge to take the fight in the first round.
He is setting his sights on a high billing at UFC Dublin, on October 24, but waved off a query about dropping from the 155lbs division to take on McGregor at 145lbs. For brief context, Duffy is the last man to have beaten McGregor in a MMA bout.
‘To tell you the truth,’ Duffy began at the post-fight press conference, ‘I don’t really concentrate on [beating McGregor]. I just go out and do my own thing.’
‘I’m going to stay at 155,’ he added. ‘I’m pretty comfortable here, and I feel like I can improve a little bit. So I think this weight is perfect.’
Duffy took a break from MMA to pursue a boxing career but returned to the sport 18 months ago and has recorded four wins through stoppages.
‘I just quietly do my own thing,’ he said. ‘I know in time, I’m going to keep putting in those performances and they’ll take note. That’s what we’re in the game for – we’re here to fight the top guys in the world. So whoever they put in front of me, I’ll be glad to be on that Dublin card, whoever it is.’
Asked if he thought he had a chance of being in the main event at the 3 Arena, Duffy’s eyes lit up.
‘That’s a dream come true, if I headline Dublin. That’s the kind of fight I want to be in.’
