The two baddest dudes on the face of the Earth could be squaring off inside the Octagon in the near future
At a recent press conference in Los Angeles, UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones revealed his interest in moving up to the heavyweight division.
“Sexual Chocolate” is due to face Anthony “Rumble” Johnson in the main event at UFC 187. However, he reckons that if he sees off the knockout artist, he might have to change weight class to find suitable opponents, after having essentially cleared out the 205 lb division.
I don’t know when I’m going to move up in weight. I’ve entertained the thought of going to heavyweight so many times, and I think right now, with all due respect to Anthony, I believe I’ll win that fight and get into superfights and rematches.
A move up to 240 lbs would leave MMA fans salivating at the prospect of two of the greatest fighters in the history of the sport going toe-to-toe inside a cage.
Jones addressed the possibility of a superfight with heavyweight kingpin Cain Velasquez, and he’s confident that he has the requisite skills to usurp Cain’s throne.
But if I do go to heavyweight, and when I do go to heavyweight, I do believe I have the skillset to beat Cain.
Cain’s a magnificent opponent. My main reason for believing I’ll beat Cain is his size. He’s not one of these massive heavyweights that is just going to outweigh me and out-power me in every situation.
He’s a guy that I can totally compete with; I believe I’m smart enough to compete with him.
Jones had the temerity to turn to el Presidente, Uncle Dana and ask him to make the fight happen.
So yeah, when it happens, it will be a good one. Make it happen, Dana. Wanna negotiate?
Dana’s response of “Let’s do it!” inspired hope that the bout might be next on the agenda for Jones. However, he let everyone remember that “Bones” has the small matter of dealing with Johnson first before he can map out his future fights.
He gestured towards the number-one contender and said to Jones with a wry smile “You’ve got this one first.”
