Don’t be fooled, we’re pretty sure he’d leave us with a distinctive taste of mat in our mouths.
But Jon Jones(21-1) is adamant that punching power is a serious weakness in his mixed martial arts game.
The UFC light heavyweight champion takes to the octagon next in May against the hardest hitter in the division in Anthony “Rumble” Johnson and Jones is under no illusions as to who has the more damaging haymakers.
“He [Johnson] has much more striking power than I do. That’s pretty obvious. I haven’t knocked out anything,” Jones said recently at a press conference.
“Rampage said I couldn’t bust a grape, and I think that’s true.”
The “Rampage” in question is Quinton Jackson, the MMA legend who was Jones’ first 205lb title defence and, like Johnson, many believed that Jones would struggle with his punching power.
But “Bones” came out on top back in 2011 after taking “Rampage” down, securing back control and slapping on a rear naked choke.
“I have a great staff of people around me, really smart coaches,” Jones said. “We’re not naïve to our strengths and our weaknesses. We’ll come up with an appropriate strategy to be successful.”
