Joe Rogan is not one bit pleased about Ronda Rousey’s next UFC title defence

Better options

Patrick McCarry

The UFC commentator has, not for the first time, likened Rousey to Mike Tyson.

Joe Rogan is one of the few people on the UFC’s pay-list that is allowed to air his opinions – positive or negative – so publicly.

The commentator regularly chimes in with his take on upcoming bouts, fighter styles and dream match-ups.

During his podcast, on Sunday, Rogan rounded on the UFC’s decision to pair Rowdy, the bantamweight champion, with former boxer Holly Holm.

‘I don’t agree with that fight… I don’t think that’s smart. I would have gone with Amanda Nunes before Holly Holm. Amanda Nunes looked like a badass when she knocked out Sara McMann.’

‘That’s a more dangerous fighter,’ Rogan added, ‘A more marketable fighter.

‘[Holm] is only the best boxer in the world if Ann Wolf decides not to box.’

UFC 184: Pennington v Holm

While Rousey was keen to stress Holm is the most lethal striker she will face in her UFC career, on her Good Morning America fight announcement, but Rogan feels grappling will trip the 33-year-old up.

‘Maybe Holly, because her standup is so much more refined – she’s been doing it for so much longer – maybe she can keep Ronda away from her.

‘Honestly,’ he continued, ‘the real problem is that there’s a lack of talent [in her division].’

Rogan likened the undefeated Rousey to Tyson in his early, dominant days on the heavyweight boxing scene.

Rogan went back to the classic Mike Tyson comparison for Rousey, but wasn’t quite as complimentary of her division.

He commented, ‘Ronda is like a Mike Tyson. She’s the elite of the elite. Those girls? No. They’re good. She’s great. They’re amongst the best.’

As for who Rogan rates as world-class in womens’ MMA – Rousey, Nunes, Claudia Gadelha, Joanna Jedrzejczyk, and ‘steroids or no steroids’ Cris Cyborg.
