Joe Rogan is rarely afraid to speak his mind.
The UFC commentator is still going strong with the promotion after 20 years and, thanks to a reduced schedule, will be sticking around for a while.
Rogan says he has three hobbies that happen to be very busy jobs – stand-up comedy, podcasts and MMA. He is pretty made up with his life, hectic that it is.
Still, that does not mean he is a ‘yes’ man for the UFC. He took a call from Brett Okamato for the 5ive Rounds podcast and let rip at the promotion for a few of their recent decisions. He said:
“I really want to see Yoel Romero get a shot at the title. I know he’s waiting, he’s waiting right now for what I think is an interesting fight between [UFC middleweight champion] Michael Bisping and Georges St-Pierre. I think that’s an interesting fight.
“I don’t like it in terms of the hierarchy of the division. I think that, as far as the division goes, it’s not good at all. It sort of hijacks the whole situation.”
Rogan feels dropping St-Pierre, who vacated the welterweight title and stepped away from the sport in 2013, straight back into a middleweight title fight takes away from the whole aura of climbing the rankigs and becoming a champion.
“The champion should always be fighting the number one available challenger,” he declared. “Right now, that is Yoel Romero.”
The second issue that grates the 49-year-old is the recent conflagration of interim titles. The final straw, he feels was the interim belt created for the postponed UFC 209 fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson. He said:
“As a person who deeply respects the position of champion, if you’re gonna do this whole interim title thing and you’re gonna have guys come back after being out of the sport for three years and get a shot right at the title, why have f***ing championships at all?”
Good old Rogan. Fighting the good fight.
