Eddie Alvarez set to finally get the big payday his career deserves

Michael Corry

Former UFC lightweight champion has jumped ship and signed for rival promotion ONE championship it has been confirmed.

“The Underground King” currently boast a 29-6 record and has fought some of the biggest names in MMA, including Conor McGregor.

The Philadelphia native has held world titles in the UFC, Bellator and Dream, making him one of the most decorated fighter’s in the history of the sport.

Rumours began to circulate last week that Alvarez was set to sign with the Asia based promotion after his deal with the UFC had expired.

The news was then confirmed via Facebook by ONE’s Founder/CEO Chatri Sityodtong.

“Please join me in welcoming Eddie Alvarez to ONE Championship! Eddie is not only one of the greatest lightweights in history, but he is the only athlete ever to win world titles in both UFC and Bellator, he said.

“His goal is to become the only person to win all three major world titles in the largest global promotions in history.”

It is a big loss for Dana White and the UFC as Alvarez is currently ranked fourth in the world and holds wins over a number of high-profile fighters including; Rafael Dos Anjos, Michael Chandler and Gilbert Melendez.

It seems as though his debut fight will come against Shinya Aoki who Alvarez has already fought twice.

Eddie Alvarez really showed his true colours with reaction to seriously injured GAA player

The pair are tied at 1-1 so it would seem that a trilogy fight would make sense, plus Aoki has already been promised a lightweight title fight in March.

Did someone say Eddie Alvarez vs Shinya Aoki 3, for the ONE lightweight championship???
