Light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier is out of UFC 197.
One of the most highly anticipated rematches in UFC history between Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones won’t be happening later this month.
Cormier has been forced to withdraw from the fight due to a shin injury. BJPenn.com broke the story in the early hours of Saturday morning and it was later confirmed by MMA Fighting via multiple sources.
Cormier v Jones II was scheduled to headline UFC 197 on April 23. At the time of writing, neither the UFC, Jones or Cormier have responded to the news, so it is not clear if Jones will remain in the main event, or how long Cormier will be out of action for. Demetrious Johnson vs. Henry Cejudo for the UFC flyweight title was the co-main event, but that could be bumped up to top of the bill.
This would mark the first time in Cormier’s 18-bout pro MMA career that he has withdrawn from a fight. Jones hasn’t fought since defending his title against DC via unanimous decision at UFC 182 on January 3 2015.
Bones was stripped of his belt and suspended by the promotion after his involvement in a hit-and-run incident in which a pregnant woman broke her arm. UFC 197 was set to be his big comeback.
