Nate Diaz can be pretty happy with himself for becoming the first man to stop Conor McGregor in a UFC bout, but another contender has claimed it would have been over even more quickly if he was in the Octagon.
Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone, another of the leading contenders to take on ‘The Notorious’ after Rafael Dos Anjos pulled out through injury, believes he would have secured a submission even early than Diaz, who got McGregor to tap out in round two.
“I would have went in there and took his ass down and submitted him right away,” Cerrone told MMAJunkie.
Claiming that he “wasn’t surprised at all” at the outcome of the UFC 196 co-main event, the 32-year-old accepted he’d probably have to wait a long time for the meeting with McGregor that he desires.
“He’s got a long list of people wanting to whip his ass now. I’m sure old ‘Cowboy’ don’t hold up much on the list,” he said.
Cerrone, who has lost once to Diaz and twice to Dos Anjos in a 29-7 MMA career, submitted Alex Oliveira last month in Pittsburgh to get back to winning ways.
He has previously taken aim at McGregor’s movement training, calling the Irishman a “p*ssy” and saying “I don’t give a sh*t what the kid does.”
McGregor’s next fight will likely come at UFC 200, with talk of a rematch with Diaz growing by the day.
