Fans of Conor McGregor will call it considered, critics will call it lazy but one thing that McGregor’s coaching style on TUF 22 definitely isn’t is typical.
While we already knew that The Notorious had taken something of a back seat to the training of Team Europe on The Ultimate Fighter, we now know the intricacies of what that entailed.
Episode 3 of TUF 22 began with UFC president Dana White breaking down the practice schedule put in place by the interim featherweight champion and it’s something that we’ve not seen on the reality show before.
“Conor has taken a very interesting approach to coaching,” White said. “He has a practice in the morning and a practice at night.
“He doesn’t show up for the practice in the morning. He lets his assistant coaches put them through a light workout and then he shows up at night and is actually very technical and very hands-on.”
You might expect the European fighters to be somewhat disappointed by the fact that McGregor had decided to only take charge of half the training sessions but they seemed to be quite happy with it.
“The training has gone really good,” said Swedish lightweight Martin Svensson. “I like the concept we are having.
“We train lightly in the morning and then in the evening we train a little bit harder.
“It’s a real honour to work with Conor McGregor.”
Poland’s Marcin Wrzosek echoed Svensson’s opinion.
He said: “Even though he said he’s not going to be here that often, he is here often enough to help us out.”
The Ultimate Fighter is on BT Sport (part of the Setanta pack in Ireland) every Thursday at 3am (repeated at 10pm on Thursdays).
