The UFC today announced that Robbie Lawler will defend his welterweight belt at UFC 189 against Rory MacDonald.
And usually that would mean that Conor McGregor’s featherweight title shot against Jose Aldo (25-1) would be pushed to co-main event status due them competing at a lighter weight class.
But nothing “usual” ever happens with Conor McGregor (17-2) and his 145lb bout will continue to headline the event, according to UFC officials.
The promotion’s decision just goes to show the fact that “The Notorious” is one of the biggest draws in the UFC at the moment.
MacDonald (18-2) gets his long-awaited 170lb championship shot after his initial opponent Hector Lombard was forced out of competition after testing positive for the anabolic steroid Desoxymethyltestosterone.
The pair of championship fights are currently the only ones that are officially slated for July 11, 2015 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
