Breaking down Conor McGregor’s heartfelt apology after Eddie Alvarez fight

"I'd like to take this chance to apologise..."

Conan Doherty

This could not have been easy for Conor McGregor.

His trash-talking is renowned, the chaos and drama he brings to events is worth the Pay Per View fee before the fights even take place, and his ego is what sets him apart – mostly because he backs it up with undisputed talent too, in fairness.

But to come out and apologise from the bottom of his heart for all the slating and ridiculing and starting fights he does deserves serious praise. And he wasted no time after clinching the lightweight belt to bring New York to a standstill and speak his humble words.

Here’s a play-by-play of what happened in his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan.

“I’ve spent a lot of time, Joe, slating everybody in the company…”

1

  1. Eyes are steady. Sincere.
  2. He takes a moment, pushes the mic away. It’s not easy.
  3. Eddie Alvarez can’t watch.
  4. Joe Rogan is gripped by the emotion of it all.

“Backstage, I’m starting fights with everybody…”

2

  1. Raised eyebrows, wide mouth. A clear sign of honest, admirable admission.
  2. Eddie Alvarez is a little more interested.
  3. Joe Rogan can’t believe power of this pure, raw moment.

“I’ve ridiculed everyone on the roster…”

3

Looks himself on the big screen, a few tears daring to surface.

Eddie Alvarez is getting choked up.

“I’d just like to say from the bottom of my heart…”

4

The entire world stops. John Kavanagh is listening. Joe Rogan looks like he hasn’t taken a breath in about three minutes.

Suspense.

“I’d like to take this chance to apologise…”

5

Bloody hell.

Even Alvarez admires him.

“To absolutely nobody.”

Oh…

  1. “I’m going to need to start paying this f**ker even more”.
  2. “Hopefully he believes this is the lightweight belt”.
  3. A wrestling match for the microphone unfolds.

Eddie Alvarez watches on. Not in admiration anymore.

  1. “Just give him the belt and keep smiling”.
  2. John Kavanagh lost interest for a split second.
  3. “What a twat”.

  1. Kavanagh is listening again as is everyone to the double champ.
  2. This is what making history looks like.
  3. Wondering what the f**k just happened.

What happened to the apology? What happened in the fight? What happened ever since our bout was announced?

McGregor happened. And he makes no apologies for it.
