BJ Penn confirms UFC return to try and snatch Conor McGregor’s belt

Too many possible fights

Frankie Edgar must be regretting breaking all those mirrors.

The featherweight really should have been next up for Conor McGregor, and now his chance of facing the Irishman at the 145lb weight division just got a hell of a lot more complicated by the return of a MMA legend.

BJPenn has long suggested he would make a comeback to the octagon, and now on the MMA hour he has done just that, with many fight-fans very, very excited by the news.

The former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion retired from MMA last July but on Tuesday night he confirmed that he’s back in training, and is gunning for McGregor’s featherweight belt.

“That’s who I am. That’s what I do,” he said. “I want to go get that 145-pound belt. That’s definitely a huge motivation for me. I believe with Greg Jackson’s help, I can get that done. And I believe that I will be able to walk away as the only man with three titles in three weight divisions.”

Penn confirmed on the show that he has teamed up with the legendary trainer to focus his training to becoming a UFC champion once again.
Penn hasn’t fought since 2010, but he told Ariel Helwani that Jackson is a key part of his ambition to get back into the octagon and test himself against the best at 145lb.

“If I didn’t have somebody like Greg Jackson to come out and talk to me and tell me that I can do this, of course you’re always going to believe that you’re the best, you’re always going to believe that you can be the champ. But once in a while, you do have to step back and get someone else’s outside opinion.

“And somebody like Greg, he tells me something like that? I look at him, and who cares what everybody else is saying around the world? This is going to be fun.”

Many UFC fans certainly seemed to agree with that. But who would you rather see McGregor fight next at the 145lb division – Frankie Edgar or BJ Penn? Vote below
