The whole country ran out of superlatives for AP McCoy last night

What a man

Conan Doherty

“It’s like being an addict.”

Being AP.

If ever there was a perfect way to round off a Bank Holiday weekend, sitting down and digesting the mindset and life of one of Ireland’s finest ever sportsmen was just the trick.

On Monday evening, the country gathered around as RTÉ aired the incredible AP McCoy documentary, Being AP.

As suspected, everyone fell in love with the Antrim man all over again.

“I’m an addict to my way of life, because it’s like a drug,” the athlete who rode 4,358 winners in his career opened up in a powerful story.

“I’m an addict to riding horses. I’m an addict to winning. But it wears off and you have to go chasing it again.

“It’s all about winning. That’s what you’re really addicted to.”

His words and his insights had everyone gripped.

Machine.

Legend.

Relentless.

Even when he’s grumpy, we loved it.

Passionate.

Amazing.

Of course, when you’ve spent so long at the top and striving and striving to get better again, life changes pretty abruptly when you finally decide to leave it all behind.

We’ll leave the last word to McCoy – a statement that sums up his drive and his legacy to complete perfection.

“I don’t think I was ever really content in my life because no matter how much you have a go at it – no matter how much you try – you can’t be as good as you want to be.”
