We’re not buying Jordan Spieth’s too nice to be true comments about Rory McIlroy

We want bad blood not this 'oul soft talk

Kevin McGillicuddy

Jordan Spieth can pretend all he bloody wants…

Behind that receding hairline is the evil mind of a golf genius, and he’s just shown another side to his devious and conniving character by trying to sweet talk Rory McIlroy ahead of this week’s WGC Matchplay Championship in San Francisco.

The 21-year-old has been speaking ahead of the action as he’s the second seed for the competition that could see the top two golfers in the world duke it out down the  back nine on Sunday evening if everything goes according to plan.

Ahead of the event the American is trying to play down a rivalry that the whole world wants to see develop in the coming years.

He doesn’t think that he can be compared to the Ulsterman unless he adds a few more Major titles to his CV.

‘I still think I have a long way to go to where I could be considered that.  I think I’m off to a good start, but I can’t compare what I’ve done to what he’s done. Certainly he’s had some more years to do so, but still in order to have a rivalry, we need to be competing against each other consistently at the highest level. And that hasn’t happened yet.’

Don’t buy it for a second Rory. He’s just trying to lull into a false sense of security before he blasts you away with putts from a bunker and tee shots to within an inch of the hole.

If the two were to face off in Sunday’s final then both players will have to come through fairly tough encounters in their groups first of all.

McIlroy will have to face Billy Horschel, Brandt Snedeker and Jason Dufner while Spieth is up against Lee Westwood, Matt Every and Mikko Ilonen.

Graeme McDowell and Shane Lowry are in the same group that sees them face Rickie Fowler and Harris English.

The action gets underway later on Wednesday evening Irish time.
