Another disappointing year for Woods
Tiger Woods is set to miss the cut for a third straight year at The Open.
Whilst Offaly local Shane Lowry sits pretty joint-top at the leaderboard it’s a different story for the American at Royal Troon.
Woods said he was targeting a second round in the mid-60s to “get something going on the weekend” following his opening of 79 however those dreams soon began to fade away.
The 48-year-old produced a clumsy chip from right of the green on the second led which eventually led to a double bogey. He even found himself 11 over par after being unable to save par while in the bunker on the fifth.
Eventually he ended up finishing 15 over par and will not be advancing any further.
Woods has injury concerns
It’s been a difficult season for the 15-time major champion and most recently made early exits from the US PGA Championship and US Open, as well as shooting a score of 82 at Augusta National this week.
He even admitted he was at a crossroads between wanting to practice more to become more competitive and fearing that he may injure himself again – ruling him out of action for a considerable amount of time.
Speaking at Pinehurst, he said: “It’s pick your poison, right?
“Play a lot with the potential of not playing, or not playing and fight being not as sharp.”
After his round today (Friday), he added: “I’m physically feeling better than I did at the beginning of the year. At the end of last year, it was tough, and I haven’t played a lot. As the year has gone on, I have got better.
“I just wish I could have played more, but I’ve been saving it for the majors just in case I do something pretty major and then take myself out of it. Hopefully next year will be better.
“I need to do a lot more work in the gym and keep progressing.”
