Rory McIlroy cruised to a three-shot victory in the Dubai Desert Classic today to begin his 2015 with a bang.
The world No.1, who began the day with a four-shot advantage, fired three birdies alongside a single bogey (just his second dropped shot of the week), to shoot a composed round of 70 and finish 22 under par, tying the record winning score at the event.
The victory extended McIlroy’s advantage at the head of the world rankings and continued a staggering run of form that dates back to his Open Championship victory last summer.
Including that win at Hoylake, McIlroy has now won four of his past seven European Tour events (Open, WGC-Bridgestone, US PGA Championship and today’s Dubai Desert Classic) and finished second in the other three.

Pictured above are Dunhill Links champion Oliver Wilson, Race to Dubai winner Henrik Stenson and last week’s Abu Dhabi victor Gary Stal, and when you look at some of McIlroy’s statistics it’s easy to see why so few have been able to top the Co. Down star on the European Tour.
– McIlroy’s scoring average across the seven events is an astonishing 67.35
– In only one of his 28 rounds has he failed to break 70, and only once has he not broken par.
– That adds up to a seven-event cumulative score of 118 under par.
– Rory’s bank balance has swelled by more than €5.1million.
The 4/1 Ladbrokes are offering about McIlroy for the Masters is suddenly looking like decent value.
