Earlier this week, Rory McIlroy found himself at the centre of the world’s stupidest shit storm.
Not everyone took aim at the Holywood native, but there were enough voices contributing to the cacophony to make it a thing.
He was called every insult under the sun, from a bigot to a fascist, all because he did the thing he loves doing and, funnily enough, it’s the one thing a lot of people enjoy seeing him doing.
All he did was play a game of golf.
What caused so many noses to wrinkle though, was the man he shared the course with. People had a real problem with the golfer playing a round with US president Donald Trump.

It’s desperately unfair, terribly sad and very disappointing, but because of all the nasty messages he received over that photo, McIlroy has been forced to explain his actions.
He posted a statement on his official Twitter account on Friday evening laying it out in plain English.
As he explained, “It was, quite simply, a round of golf.”
Nothing more, nothing less.
