Rory McIlroy will not defend the Claret Jug at St Andrew’s next week.
The four-time major winner has given up on whatever slim hopes he had of recovering from the ankle injury he sustained in a kickabout with his friends last weekend.
McIlroy announced the news on Instagram – where he broke the injury development in the first place – and did so in the most laid back manner imaginable as he posted a picture of his injured leg up on the table as he chilled out and watched Andy Murray at Wimbledon.
The photo appears to have #NoFilter.
McIlroy stated that he didn’t want to return to action until he is “100% ready” but gave no indication of what kind of time span he envisages his recovery taking.
“After much consideration, I have decided not to play in the Open Championship at St. Andrews. I’m taking a long term view of this injury and, although rehab is progressing well, I want to come back to tournament play when I feel 100% healthy and 100% competitive.”
Whether he’s quite as relaxed when he’s watching on as someone else lifts his Claret Jug remains to be seen…
