No, it isn’t John Delaney.
Forbes have released their annual list of the world’s top 100 richest athletes and Rory McIlroy is the only Irish man to make the cut.
The world number one, who has won two majors in the last 12 months, banked a whopping $48.3m dollars (€42.7m), including $32m (€28.3m) in sponsorship, to claim the 12th spot on the list. This puts the Hollywood native three places ahead of Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton who earned $39m (€34.5m).
There are no surprises at the top of the list, where Floyd Mayweather remains for the second year running after banking a cool $300m(€266m). Money raked in just $15m (€13.2m) from endorsements while the rest of his earnings came from the extremely lucrative “fight of the century” against Manny Pacquiao.
Meanwhile, Pacquiao earnings amounted to $160m (€141m) which made him the (very) comfortable second highest paid athlete of the year.
Cristiano Ronaldo came in third place with $79.6m (€70m), edging out Lionel Messi in fourth who earned $73.8m (€65m). Tennis great roger Federer rounded off the top five with $67m (€59m)
