Six bogeys can’t stop Ulsterman sharing second place.
Rory McIlroy recovered from a disastrous early start to his second round at the Australian Open to shoot a 69 and share second place at the half-way point.
The Ulsterman bogeyed three of his opening seven holes but recovered with pars and birdies to end the back nine (he teed off on 10th hole) +1.
The front nine was almost as mixed as he hit consecutive bogeys on 12 and 13 but then shot an eagle on 14 to kick-start his round .
From there he ended the round with three birdie’s from the last four to shoot a second consecutive 69 and end the day on 4 under, along with Adam Crawford, Corad Shindler and amateur Todd Sinnot.
Greg Chalmers is the leader, just one shot ahead of McIlroy on 5 under after shooting a 66, while Adam Scott also shot the same score to move up the leaderboard to joint ninth.
Speaking afterwards McIlroy, who like all the golfers wore a black ribbon in memory of Phil Hughes, felt the wind made conditions difficult for playing solid golf.
