McIlroy and Scheffler to face off against DeChambeau and Koepka in one-off event

The two biggest stars on the PGA Tour will compete against the most high-profile figures of LIV Golf.

Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler will take on Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka in a one-off televised match.

According to Golfweek, golf’s long-running civil war will play out for all to see in mid-December when the leading men of opposing organisations tee-off against each other in Las Vegas.

The event will be broadcast by TNT and is a variation of the long-running series The Match, which has seen the likes of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson compete against each other in 2018, as well as Bryson vs Brooks in 2021.

The event has also featured names from other sporting arenas, like the NFL vs NBA game last year which saw Klay Thompson, Stephen Curry, Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes.

Kelce and Mahomes won that won with a score of 3 and 2.

McIlroy confirmed the reports and told Golfweek: “I’m thrilled to partner with Scottie in what promises to be an exciting duel against Bryson and Brooks in Vegas this December.

“This isn’t just a contest between some of golf’s major champions, it’s an event designed to energize the fans.

“We’re all here to put on a great show and contribute to a goodwill event that brings the best together again.”

Blake Smith, who represents both Koepka and Scheffler, told the publication: “Brooks and Scottie are very excited to be a part of this unique event and look forward to sharing more soon.”

Brett Falkoff, the agent for DeChambeau, also confirmed his client’s involvement: “Bryson looks forward to competing in Las Vegas this December in an event that is sure to provide great entertainment for the fans.”

All four participants have a long history with each other.

McIlroy and Koepka were tied at four major victories each until Koepka won a fifth at the 2023 PGA Championship, while DeChambeau narrowly edged McIlroy in a heartbreaking finish to the U.S. Open at Pinehurst in June.

There have even been rumours in recent years that soon-to-be teammates Koepka and DeChambeau have had a long-running feud.

There have been little jibes between the players on social media from time to time and, in 2019, Golf Channel reporter Eamonn Lynch reported that he witnessed a confrontation between the two during a competition.

Lynch wrote: “Was standing on the putting green with Koepka’s caddie earlier when an irritated Bryson DeChambeau walked up & told him to tell his boss to make any comment about slow play “to my face”.

“Brooks arrived soon after, got the message & ambled over for a chat with the scientist.”

In 2020, Koepka seemed to reference an inside joke between him and DeChambeau.

While everyone will be hoping for a fiery and loaded affair between the opposing factions come December, it’s a lot more likely that the event is being put on as an attempt to smooth over tensions within the golfing community.
