Cole Hammer – the kid with the greatest name in golf, yet no relation to Arnie Hammer – is preparing to play in the US Open.
The [next, great, watch-this-space] teenage golfing sensation qualified for the 2015 tournament by recording rounds of 64 and 68 at Chambers Bay over the last couple of days.
Hammer, who has already committed to play – and perhaps study – at University of Texas, is already on a firm path to emulate his golfing hero, Jordan Spieth.
He told Golf.com: ‘I thought it was a bit of a long shot, but I figured “Why not?”
‘I never dreamed I could do it. This means the world to me. When I saw Jordan win the Masters [at 21], I said, “Alright I can do this”.’
Hammer’s hero is Jordan Spieth.Funnily enough, Hammer is only be the fourth youngest player to compete in the US Open, a tournament that has no age restrictions.
In 2012, Chinese wunderkind Andy Zhang became the youngest ever as he teed off as a mere 14-year-old.
Zhang recorded rounds of 78 and 79 to miss the cut, at +17, and make us all feel better about ourselves.
