Seamus McEnaney has been around the block, there’s no doubting that.
The current Wexford manager previously was the helm with Meath as well as his upcoming opponents Monaghan.
McEnaney was speaking on the GAA Hour in the build up to Wexford’s second round qualifier against Monaghan and the draw came as a shock to the Corduff man.
“I listened to it in my bed on Monday morning and I almost fell out if it and almost got sick in the bed,” he said.
“It took me about two hours to get my head around having to go through the following two weeks.”
To get to this point Wexford had to get past Limerick in the first round of the qualifiers and had previously lost to Carlow in the preliminary round of the Leinster Championship.
If they were to have gone on to win that game Wexford would have faced Dublin with the loser entering the first round of the qualifiers and a defeat was inevitable in the eyes of the Monaghan native.
“I understood that we were always going to be in the first round of the qualifiers because the winner of (Carlow vs. Wexford) played Dublin.
“So, therefore, everything I planned was for the first round of the qualifiers.”
Long gone are the days that minnows like Wexford or Carlow could compete with Dublin but more recently managers and players have openly admitted that they simply don’t stand a chance.
McEnaney tried to be realistic about the current situation in Leinster and where Wexford are as a county.
“You have to be realistic from a Wexford point of view or with most teams in Leinster, Dublin are that far ahead of the rest, you got to think of it as Championship as a whole.
“You’ve got to think of the three competitions, the National Football League, the Leinster Championship and the All-Ireland series and we take them one at a time.”
