One of Wicklow’s finest GAA servants called time on his career this week.
Alan Byrne was a mainstay of the Garden County’s football teams for the last decade or so but earlier this week he decided it was time to hang up his boots.
Various tributes were paid to the Annacurra corner-back for his years of service.
But it has taken until today for his status as Ireland’s best nicknamed GAA player to emerge.
According to Wicklow football Daragh O’Sullivan, Alan’s nickname was ‘Shovels’

As defender, we could think of no higher compliment.
Byrne quits the game as one of the most decorated Wicklow footballers of his generation
