WATCH: RTÉ release spine-tingling promo video for 2017 GAA Championships

"A tie to home, a unique bond that can't be bought or broken"

Such a shame they cannot screen the opening match.

New York and Sligo get the Championship underway this evening (throw in 8.15pm) in Gaelic Park, with the match being broadcast live on RTÉ Radio 1 and Ocean FM.

Marty Morrissey is Stateside, in the city of his childhood, but the Connacht SFC preliminary round match will not be televised.

It is a bone of contention for fans that the Championship begins with such a whimper but the national broadcaster are doing their best to get us all excited ahead of their first live match on May 20 – Monaghan v Fermanagh in the Ulster SFC.

The three All-Ireland finals (two football and one hurling) featured in the top 10 televised events of last year and RTÉ tapped into the fervour that sweeps the nation for their latest promo – a mash-up of live action, fan footage, behind the scenes out-takes and a poetic script.

It is a winning formula that hits home once more.

The promotion speaks of, “A connection that runs through our bloodlines, streets and corridors.

“A link to the past, a bridge to the future. A tie to home, a unique bond that can’t be bought or broken. For we are stronger together when we all simply connect.”
