Is Bryan Sheehan the best club footballer in the country right now?
Just last week we highlighted how the forward may be the most overworked club player in the country since Kerry’s All-Ireland final loss to Dublin.
Since that September loss he’s been lining out with his club St Mary’s in the Kerry intermediate club championship, and Munster series, and his divisional side in the Kerry senior football championship.
Add in league games and local South Kerry championship to the mix and Sheehan is on course to play football every weekend now until almost Christmas week.
Not that it’s hampering his performances as he led St Mary’s to a Munster club final last week with a devastating demolition of Corofin from Clare, with Sheehan playing the full 60 minutes of the game.
There was concern he wasn’t rested, with South Kerry’s replay to Legion just seven days later, but Sheehan is reported to have told Maurice Fitzgerald, the St Mary’s manager, that he didn’t want to be subbed off because he was enjoying his football so much.
Fast forward to Sunday afternoon in Killarney and Sheehan scored 1-5 of South Kerry’s 1-13 total in their one-point win over Legion in the Kerry county senior football final replay.
The game went to extra time after ending 1-11 apiece, and Sheehan missed almost the entirety of extra time due to a black card, but by that stage he had already dragged South Kerry back into the game after they trailed by four points at half-time.
South Kerry were behind by 1-10 to 0-7 seven minutes into the second half when Sheehan took a pass from full-forward Paul O’Donoghue on the run, ducked inside the Legion cover, faked to shoot, and then took a few extra steps before planting the ball beyond Kerry colleague Brian Kelly.
Sheehan got to lift the Bishop Moynihan trophy afterwards and there was huge praise for his performance.
