Feast of club GAA live on the box and GAA GO this weekend

Niall McIntyre

Get the slippers on and the remote in hand.

Stick the feet up and soak it all in. The weather is wet, the couch is calling. It’s a sports filled Saturday and club GAA is centre stage.

Everything is in order. Things are as they should be.

Ploughing a lone furrow for years through consecutive club seasons, TG4 are finally getting a helping hand this year. RTÉ are finally on board and with the national broadcaster complimenting the Irish language station’s excellent broadcast offering, it’s fair to say us hungry gaels are being catered for like never before.

Last weekend was good, but this is the start of it.

On Saturday, RTÉ are heading down to Kilkenny for the ever competitive Kilkenny SHC quarter finals. Widely known as one of the most evenly balanced championships of the lot, we’re in for two good games live from Nowlan Park this Saturday.

Unfortunately, the main event won’t go ahead Noreside. Ballyhale Shamrocks and Clara –  five county championships between this decade – has had to be postponed due to unforeseen circumstances.

So that will be replaced by overall favourites O’Loughlin Gaels vs Mullinavat in a game that has been moved into the county grounds.

That will be followed by Dicksboro v Erins Own – a game guaranteed to set the pulses racing. Erins Own told Bennettsbridge where to go in an impressive relegation semi-final win, and the Castlecomer outfit are as dogged as they come. They ran Ballyhale close when rank underdogs last year and they never go down without a fight. The ‘Boro’ are 1/3 favourites but they will have their work cut out here.

Between these two titanic clashes, players of the calibre of Cillian Buckley, Conor Fogarty, Paddy Deegan, John Walsh and the ageless Martin ‘Gorta’ Comerford will all be on show. Bring it on.
