VIDEO: Roscommon run up cricket score on Cork as Donegal grind out win against Mayo

Kevin McGillicuddy

To beat one Munster kingpin in a season may be considered fortunate.

But to rack up back-to-back wins over Kerry and Cork will surely blow Roscommon’s carefully planned cover for the rest of the season.

Kevin McStay’s side enjoyed only a single point win over Kerry three weeks ago but today on Leeside they blew away the Rebels, who looked stunned by the Connacht side’s power, pace and incredible scoring power.

They led at the break by 2-13 to 1-7, goals from Senan Kilbride and Cathal Cregg sending them on their way to a famous win.

Elsewhere, Kerry got their first win of the new season in a comprehensive win over Down by 0-22 to 0-9 in Newry, as Colm Cooper made his first appearance of 2016 in green and gold and grabbed two points for his troubles.

The grudge match of the afternoon in the top flight was the clash of Mayo and Donegal in Ballybofey, where the home side just edged a tense encounter by 1-14 to 1-12.

In a scrappy game, referee Barry Cassidy was kept busy by both sides pulling and ragging their opponents at pretty much every opportunity.

Mayo led by a point at the short whistle but thought they had gained the upper hand when awarded a penalty early in the second half.

Diarmuid O’Connor stepped up after Evan Regan was fouled in the square, but a full five minutes elapsed as Donegal objected to the spot-kick, and O’Connor’s effort had to be retaken due to Donegal players infringing before the kick was taken.

However, Donegal hit back with a wonderful team-move that ended with Leo McLoone slamming the ball to the net and giving them the platform to hang on for a two-point win with less than five to play.

Elsewhere in Division 2, Cavan pulled off a remarkable comeback against Meath to beat the Royals by 1-20 to 1-13, while Galway enjoyed an impressive win over Derry by 1-18 to 1-11 and Tyrone beat Laois 1-14 to 0-14.
