Pure and utter joy for Jamie Wall as Mary I secure back-to-back Fitzgibbon Cup titles

Such pride

Sean McMahon

A huge achievement.

Reigning champions, Mary Immaculate College, have secured back-to-back Fitzgibbon Cup titles as they emerged victorious over Carlow IT 3-24 to 1-19 at Pearse Stadium in Salthill.

This final was a much more straightforward affair for the Limerick side, they were eight points up at half-time before killing the game off in the second half with goals from Daragh O’Donovan, Aaron Gillane and Pa Ryan.

Compare this to their success in 2016, when the final against UL went to extra-time before a final scoreline of 1-3o to 3-22.

Mary I Bainisteoir, Jamie Wall, surely must be one of the youngest Fitzgibbon Cup winning managers at the tender age of 24.

For Wall, it has been a remarkable journey over the past couple of years.

The former underage Cork dual player has been confined to a wheelchair ever since he suffered an epidural abscess on his spine which ultimately led to the loss of the use of his legs.

Since then, he has focused on management and today he helped create further history for the Limerick college.

His pride couldn’t be summed up any more perfectly in the below videos which were captured by Jerome Quinn.

Here you can see the reaction of Wall when the full-time whistle sounded and his post-match thoughts.
