Peter Harte’s shoulder safe from further harm as Mayo stalwart leaves the country

Mikey Stafford

If he decides to hitchhike he won’t be short of a hard shoulder.

Mayo will be without Tom Cunniffe this summer after the defender took the decision to go travelling.

The Mayo News are reporting the Castlebar Mitchels man is planning to head away in the coming months, and has declined Stephen Rochford’s invite to link up with the county panel as they plan their tilt at an historic sixth Connacht Championship on the spin.

Cunniffe has not featured in the green and red during the Allianz League due to Castlebar Mitchels’ run to the AIB All-Ireland club football final, which they lost to Dublin champions Ballyboden St Enda’s.

One of the most experienced members of an experienced panel, having made his debut in 2007, Cunniffe’s no-nonsense style will be missed by Rochford, if not opponents such as Peter Harte.

On his travels, if Cunniffe encounters any trouble he can intimidate his would-be attackers with that Youtube video or, if WIFI is dodgy, keep this picture to hand.

That, combined with a pocketful of Connacht SFC medals, should see Cunniffe drink for free in Irish bars from Melbourne to Micronesia.
