“The one thing I will say is I haven’t talked to one person from Galway County Board”

Niall McIntyre

“Now, there’s a scoop for you”

Twists and turns, swings and roundabouts. Peaks and troughs, highs and lows. Wexford hurling fans have experienced them all these last few months.

And we’re not even talking about the hurling.

Will Davy stay or will he go? Down in Wexford, they’re crazy about him. They need him. He’s overseen a huge upturn in their fortunes over the last few years, particularly this year when they won Leinster for the first time in fifteen years.

They were only the puck of a ball away from Tipperary. Wexford’s system is perfect and Davy is the man at the helm. Should he leave, you would fear that it would be the equivalent of sending a county back to the drawing board.

Plenty of hard work back to square one.

The speculation has been rife. Ever since Micheal Donoghue left the Galway job, Davy’s name has been doing the rounds. Galway, as he says himself is only a 40 minute trek while Wexford is a three hour cross-country commute.

What Davy said after Tipp loss, belief in their system and tunes in the dressing room

On Monday afternoon, it took another fan. Wexford fans everywhere were down when Paddy Power suspended odds on Fitzgerald becoming the next Galway manager.

It didn’t look good. But it’s not set in stone yet. Speaking on Radio Midwest on Tuesday morning, Fitzgerald says he’s yet to make his mind up on staying or going from Wexford. His “heart is torn unreal” but his decision will be made in the next day or two.

“It’s probably two and a half to three hours down and the same back. That’s three or four nights a week but listen I’ve a very special bunch of boys down there…”

One thing he did confirm is that he hasn’t spoken to the Galway higher-ups.

“The one thing I will say is I haven’t talked to one person from Galway County Board.”

The speculation rumbles on.
