The O’Byrne Cup final has been moved to mid-February after being called off

Matthew Gault

The Bord Na Mona O’Byrne Cup final between Meath and Westmeath has been moved to February. News broke on Sunday morning that the match had been postponed due to an unplayable pitch at O’Moore Park.

A pitch inspection took place at 9.30am and it was decided that adverse weather conditions meant the venue was unable to host the clash.

The contingency plan was to move the game to TEG Cusack Park but that pitch is also not in adequate condition after hosting an AIB All-Ireland junior football championship match between Knocknagree and Naomh Colmcille.

Pairc Tailteann had already been ruled out as an All-Ireland club junior hurling championship semi-final between Ardmore and Setanta had been scheduled there for 2pm and there are no floodlights to allow the staging of a 4pm throw-in, but that JHC game has also been postponed.

Other postponements include Kanturk v Middletown (IHC) in Newbridge and Glaveys v Kilanerin (IFC) in Tullamore.

The O’Byrne Cup final will now be played on the weekend of 17/18 February with a venue to be agreed on Monday, with the McKenna Cup final between Tyrone and Donegal has also being pushed back to that weekend.

Also called off are all of the AIB All-Ireland club championship matches scheduled for today in Navan, Newbridge, Portlaoise and Tullamore.
