Mayo’s record in the Croke Park House of Pain is indeed painful reading

The N5 is a highway to hell

Mikey Stafford

Fair play for continuing to run up that hill.

First things first, Mayo football is better set than most. Twenty-two finals at club and county across senior, junior and intermediate is pretty impressive and the Connacht powerhouse are a hell of a lot more successful than the majority of counties.

But of those 22 finals contested by senior, intermediate and junior teams since 1951 (when the county won their last senior All-Ireland) they have won only two – Ballina and Crossmolina claiming senior club titles in 2005 and 2001 respectively.

Yesterday intermediate club Hollymount Carramore and junior finalists Ardnaree became the latest Mayo sides to fall at the final hurdle, both losing to Kerry opposition.

Thank heavens for the minor footballers, who have won six out of 16 finals since 1951.

Below is the tale of woe, with all but two of these finals taking place at Croke Park.
