Mayo’s calamitous pair of own goals has the world believing in the Mayo Curse

Mikey Stafford

When I went on national radio to talk about this stupid Mayo Curse I was not a believer.

I expected proof in the form of a Mayo victory but that first 35 minutes has a lot of football fans beginning to think there is something in the infamous curse of 1951.

We all know the story: Mayo celebrated too heartily as they travelled past a funeral in Foxford, a priest said they would never win another All-Ireland as long as any of the team were still alive, cue a long absence from the big show followed by several calamitous performances and some very close calls.

This year was supposed to be different and looked like being so when they held Dublin scoreless for half an hour. Unfortunately Kevin McLoughlin and Colm Boyle put the ball in their own net.

If that is not a curse than Twitter wants to know what it.

I’m still not a believer and Mayo have 35 minutes to turn it round. Just score a couple of goals at the same end.
