LISTEN: Maurice Shanahan’s explosive interview shows the raw pain he felt after Waterford loss

F-bombs completely understandable

Conan Doherty

Maurice Shanahan doesn’t accept second best.

He doesn’t accept giving up and he sure as hell doesn’t accept excuses.

The Waterford man was hurting bad after Sunday’s Munster final defeat to Tipperary.

The Deise had another bad day at the office and there wasn’t much for fans to cheer about as the Premier county ran through them for a shortcut and eased to a 21-point win in the end.

And Shanahan wasn’t any chirpier after the game.

Speaking with SportsJOE’s Mikey Stafford, the Waterford corner forward delivered an explosive interview on the GAA Hour hurling podcast.

“It’s very disappointing,” he said. “F**king… we let ourselves down as a team, we let the Waterford people down. All we can do now is f**king get ourselves together again and hopefully drive on for two weeks time.

“But it’s very disheartening at the moment because we certainly didn’t come here for that kind of performance. It’s just very hard to take.”

Asked if the weather played a part in the result, he was having absolutely none of it.

“No, I wouldn’t [say that],” he said sharply. “The conditions were the same for Tipp so I wouldn’t blame the conditions one bit. I just don’t know what happened.

“It’s very hard to know. We’ll have to look back to see what went wrong but everything went wrong today. It’s just hard to take.”
