Diarmuid Connolly and Con O’Callaghan came head to head in hurling and there was only one winner

A clash of the titans

Darragh Culhane

County final day.

Who doesn’t love it?

There were plenty of them around the country across both codes.

In Mayo, the O’Connor brothers faced the ever dominant Castlebar Mitchels in their county final but were ultimately undone in a scoreline of 0-15 to 0-13.

Cillian O’Connor did score six points but it wasn’t enough as Mitchels won their third successive Mayo Senior Football Championship and will look to win back the Connacht Championship after losing out to Corofin last season.

Across in the stickball, Dublin’s Diarmuid Connolly, who was rumoured to change codes, was facing fellow Dublin teammate Con O’Callaghan in the Dublin Senior Championship semi-final. Cuala are the current All-Ireland champions and went another step to retaining their crown as they beat St.Vincent’s 4-16 to 2-16 and will face Kilmacud Crokes in the final.

Both Connolly and O’Callaghan represented them quite well on the day as the Vinnies player got on the scoreboard with a couple of points but it wasn’t enough and it was the ever-influential O’Callaghan that struck the killer blow.

In the 54th minute, the Cuala man scored a goal to put daylight between the two teams as they six points up and eventually won by that margin in a scoreline of 4-16 to 2-16.
